Expectations

In your opinion, which of the followging is worse; Having expectations that are too high, or having no expectations at all. This can obviously tie into the approaching season if one wanted it to, but also everday life in general. So what about your opinon?

This is an interesting question. As a student and a teacher, I have given this some thought.

A few years ago, when I was with some friends who were also Class of '68, we started talking about how well so many people in our class have done. what drove us, we wondered? While we were self motivated as young adults, it was because, we decided, our parents and teachers had high expectations for us and we bought into it. The idea of excellence, not being lazy, not being sloppy, giving service - we lived it (and happily, I might add. We did not know how to be any different).

Teachers expected and demanded our best efforts and behavior. No one talked about our self esteem; no one had to: by the effort our teachers gave and demanded, they showed us.

Now we are the parents, teachers, and grandparents. Have we cheated your generation by not insisting on the high standards in ALL work and conduct.

Time will tell, but I wonder if you who are the current high school students, realize the effect expectations (others, your own, have on you).

Good question, Brian

I found this to be a very interesting post Brian. I bellieve it is better to have too high of expectations than none at all due to the fact that not living up to a high expectation is better than not having one at all. If you fall short of say, the goal of having first honors, some people will push themselves even harder to accomplish this goal. Now, I know other people will become discouraged by not accomplishing what they wanted and will be scared to try, but those who do get encouraged by failure will definitely benefit. If a person doesn't have any goals at all how can they truly succeed?
