Fatherless choice #3

One of the reviewers of Fatherless called the characters noble and flawed. Explain this by using at least three characters from the story.

Michael Burns was both noble and flawed. He worked for HSN, therefore he was flawed because of the inappropriate content they showed. However he was noble too, as he went to a priest for advice and he also took the job for the betterment of his family even though it was against his beliefs.

Joe Delgado was also both noble and flawed. He didn't reveal the information on the pill, because he feared it would hurt the company and maybe even cost him his job. He was noble for the same reason as Michael Burns because he went to Father Sweeney for advice.

Maggie Kealey was also flawed as she had many family problems that she was unable to fix. Her husband left her and Moia committed suicide. She was probably the most noble of the group, because she had so many problems to deal with but still tried everyday to improve her family life.

Some aspects of the characters’ lives are moral and pure, while other parts are questionable. The main characters are generally good, respectable people that have faults and imperfections. Three examples of these characters are Father John Sweeney, Michael Burns, and Joe Delgado. Clearly, Father Sweeney is a devout, Catholic, prayerful man, that genuinely cares for others, however, he also has too strong of a desire to be liked by his parishioners. In some parts of the book, he chooses to stay quiet, opposed to speaking up for what he really wants to say. Michael Burns and Joe Delgado are other examples of noble yet flawed characters. Both men are very active in the parish and can be counted on when a volunteer is needed. They are men who are doing their best to live their faith, but face circumstances that challenge their morals. Michael Burns struggles with the fact that the company he works for is bringing morally objectionable shows into the home. He struggles with what such programming will do to the fabric of the American family, and how should he, a devout Catholic man, respond. Joe Delgado discovers that the company he works for deliberately covered up results that proved the harmful effects that the pill has on women’s’ health. He does more research in the area, and struggles with whether or not he should tell what he knows, warning women who think that the Pill is safe. He knows that to do so would endanger his career, and possibly his marriage.

Joe Delgado was flawed but saw problems in his decisions and strove to change them. He was flawed in that he didn't do anything to reveal the pills bad effects. He was noble in that he went to Fr. John Sweeney for advice.

Michael burns worked for HSN which had a sinful business. His personality was flawed by the content that was broad casted by his network. In the end he also had a noble side in that, He went to Father Sweeney for help.

Maggie Kealey had a flawed family life. She was abandoned by her husband and her daughter committed suicide. Her noble side was her constant effort to better the lives of her family members.
