I think that Father John is the most memorable character because he is the main character and the story revolves around his adventures and trials throughout his ministry. He is a very interesting character because he is in fact “Fatherless” in the sense that he doesn’t have God’s guidance. Father John is also a very memorable character because he tries so hard to fix everyone’s problems but he knows he is only one man and can’t. He is so hard on himself it, makes it very difficult for him to accept defeat. That is why I believe John Sweeny is a very memorable character.
John thought that maybe he had worried too much about the Kealey’s and not enough about the younger families. John then started to cry because he tried so hard to help people and still felt worthless and that God wasn’t by his side. I believe that this is the scene that stands out most in my mind because John has lost faith in God completely. He doesn’t know where to turn at this point and is completely broken. It is a bold move to show a character this vulnerable in a novel, and is a nice change of pace for a book for once.
